Her Excellency Mrs. Denise NKURUNZIZA, First Lady of the Republic of Burundi was born at Gatsinda, Mwumba District of Ngozi province in the northern part of Burundi on December 1st 1969. Rev. Denise BUCUMI, daughter of Protais NTAHOMPAGAZE and Angèle GAKECURU was born in a family of 12 children with 5 girls and 7 boys. She did her primary school education at Gatsinda Primary School and the first four years of high school at Busiga in her home region to complete the last four years at ENEFA Kibumbu (Ecole Normal d’Education Familiale/ Family Economy Education School), Mwaro province, in the central region of Burundi.

Denise Bucumi-Nkurunziza (born 1 December 1969) is a Burundianordained minister who was First Lady of Burundi from 2005 to 2020 as the wife of Pierre Nkurunziza. She is the only ordained minister who has served as a first lady of any African nation.[1]
Life
[edit]Bucumi-Nkurunziza was born in Gatsinda, Mwumba in Ngozi Province on 1 December 1969. She married Pierre Nkurunziza in 1994 shortly before Nkurunziza was forced to go into hiding in the early stages of the Burundian Civil War. He joined the rebel National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy (Conseil National Pour la Défense de la Démocratie – Forces pour la Défense de la Démocratie, CNDD–FDD) and rose though its ranks. A series of agreements in 2003 paved the way for the CNDD–FDD to be reintegrated into politics. Bucumi-Nkurunziza was reunited with her husband after several years of separation.
