    Since for a change I have kept writing pace with the movies I’ve seen this month and I am aware that these omnibus posts can go on at greater length than is probably good for them I am attempting a new format. Time will tell whether I manage to continue with it throughout the next fortnight or drop behind again.

    The Roaring Twenties (1939) I’m not sure why this entertaining melodrama from the culmination of the Warner Bros. gangster cycle, begun roughly in 1931 with Public Enemy, wound up in the Criterion Collection except that it was directed — effectively, I will admit — by Raoul Walsh and for all its excellence otherwise as a purveyor of first-rate restorations of classic movies Criterion swoons, to an absurd degree sometimes, over what it perceives as auteurs… essentially, any director, of any movie. Walsh was one of those journeyman contract directors who occasionally delivered something exceptional (the 1930 widescreen epic The Big Trail comes to mind, and to a lesser extent the 1949 White Heat, featuring what may be James Cagney’s best performance… amid a lot of garbage one has to sit through to get to it involving those virtuou
