Conductor Mariss Jansons, leading Russia's St. Petersburg Philharmonic on a U.S. tour that comes to Tampa Bay tonight, has one of the world's great musical pedigrees. The son of a renowned conductor, Arvid Jansons, he was the assistant of the Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) Philharmonic's legendary music director, Evgeny Mravinsky.
Mravinsky, like his contemporaries Arturo Toscanini, Fritz Reiner and George Szell, had a reputation for being hard on orchestra players.
"He was very demanding, but not tyrannical," Jansons said. "He was a great personality, a thoughtful man who worked hard. He was a good orchestra coach, especially productive in rehearsal."
When the 1995-96 season ends, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic will have played away from home almost three months. Income from touring has been crucial to the orchestra's survival in what Jansons said has become "a very unpredictable country" since the fall of the Soviet Union.
