When Professor Sunil Ariyaratne was studying for the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level in at St. John’s College, Nugegoda, one of his favourite textbooks was W.A. Silva’s novel ‘Vijayaba Kollaya’.
Fifty-six years later in , the eminent academic-writer-lyricist-director has made a film out of the novel he relished reading as a student more than five decades ago.
“I never thought that I would make a film from the text I learnt as a student in ,” said an elated Ariyaratne in a media interview.
‘Vijayaba Kollaya’ directed by Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne was released on 1 August in 80 cinema halls in the island including those of the EAP circuit as well as the Savoy and Regal theatres in Colombo. It is the first three-dimensional stereoscopic film to be shot in Sinhala.
The minute-long film was produced by H.D. Premasiri for ‘Sarasavi Sine Ru’. Kumudini Dias Haputhanthri, Chandu Haputhanthri and Chandri Haputhanthri are the co-producers. The spectacular movie was produced at a cost of Rs. 75 million.

It was 'house full' at the Galle Face Hotel's Lotus Room when a distinguished gathering of film artistes, friends and close relatives came to wish Dr. Lester James Peries 'happy birthday' and good health. He was being recognised for his contribution to Sinhala cinema over the past five decades.
During the past few years something meaningful has been done every year to mark Lester's birthday. Last year, a study on his second Sinhala film 'Sandesaya' was released. In , a stamp was issued in his honour - the first time that a stamp was released of a contemporary Sri Lankan artiste. This year saw the release of a pictorial biography of Lester's life and work by Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne.
It took Sunil two years to compile this beautiful commemorative volume. "I had just 12 days to finish the artwork," reputed graphic designer Gunasiri Colambage told me. But he was pleased with the outcome.
