    Swami Rama Tirtha (pronunciation 22 October – 17 October [1]), also known as Ram Soami, was an Indian teacher of the Hindu philosophy of Vedanta. He was among the first notable teachers of Hinduism to lecture in the United States, travelling there in , preceded by Swami Vivekananda in and followed by Paramahansa Yogananda in [2][3] During his American tours Swami Rama Tirtha spoke frequently on the concept of "practical Vedanta"[4] and education of Indian youth.[5] He proposed bringing young Indians to American universities and helped establish scholarships for Indian students.[6]

    Rama Tirtha was born in a Punjabi Brahmin family[7] to Pandit Hiranand Goswami on 22 October (Deepawali Vikram Samvat ) in the village of Muraliwala in the Gujranwala District of Punjab, Pakistan.[1] His mother died when he was a few days old and he was raised by his elder brother Gossain Gurudas. After receiving a master's degree in mathematics from The Government College of Lahore he became professor of mathematics at Forman Christian College, Lahore.

    Swami Rama Tirtha, previously known as Gossain Tirtha Rama, was born in , at Murariwala, a village in the district of Gujranwala, Punjab, India. His mother passed away when he was but a few days old and he was brought up by his elder brother, Gossain Gurudas.

    As a child, Rama was very fond of listening to recitations from the holy scriptures and attending Kathas. He often put questions to holy men and even offered explanations. He was very intelligent and loved solitude.

    Rama was barely ten years old when his father got him married. His father left him under the care of his friend, Bhakta Dhana Rama, a man of great purity and simplicity of life. Rama regarded him as his Guru, and offered to him his body and soul in deep devotion. His surrender to his Guru was so complete that he never did anything without first consulting him. He wrote numerous loving letters to him.

    Rama was a brilliant student, especially in mathematics. After completing his degree, he served for a while as Professor of Mathematics in the Forman Christian College.
