Content: A Story of the African Indian Ocean
The island archipelago of Zanzibar, which lies approximately 16 miles off the coast of Tanganyika, along with the Swahili coast of East Africa, long served as an intermediary between the continental hinterland and the Indian Ocean trading system: slaves, ivory, gold and spices came to the eastern coast of the continent, where they were transported to Zanzibar, and then distributed by merchants to the Persian Gulf, India and beyond; beads, cloth and weapons travelled from Zanzibar to the coast, and then were distributed in the hinterland (Rothman 2002: 82).
Prior to the arrival of Europeans in the region, the coast was ruled by the Waswahili, whose powerful city-states dotted the coast from Somalia to Mozambique, and whose cosmopolitan culture arose as a direct result of this trade. Early contacts between the East African coast and the Arabian Peninsula were marked most significantly by the arrival of Islam in the eighth century (Glassman 2011: 24). The binds of Islam extended across the ocean between these two regions (and, indeed, others in the western and eastern regions of the littoral), and came to form the identity of the dwellers of the

Hamad bin Muhammad bin Juma bin Rajab el Murjebi (amejulikana zaidi kwa jina la Tippu Tip; 1837 – 14 Juni1905) alikuwa mfanyabiashara mashuhuri katika Afrika ya Mashariki na ya Kati wakati wa karne ya 19.
Alikutana na wapelelezi mashuhuri kama David Livingstone, Henry Morton Stanley na Hermann von Wissmann.
Kwa miaka kadhaa alikuwa gavana wa Kongo ya Mashariki kwa niaba ya mfalme wa Ubelgiji.

Baba yake alikuwa mfanyabiashara Mwarabu Muhammed bin Juma, mama yake Bint Habib bin Bushir, alikuwa Mwarabu wa tabaka la watawala toka Muscat.
Hamed aliingia katika shughuli za biashara tangu umri wa miaka 12 akafaulu katika biashara ya misafara kati ya Zanzibar na Kongo.
Akiwa na umri mdogo, Hamad aliongoza kundi la wanaume 100 kwenda Afrika ya Kati kutafuta watumwa na pembe za ndovu.[1] Baada ya kuvamia maeneo mengi alirudi Zanzibar kuimarisha vyanzo vyake na kukusanya watu wa kumsaidia ili arudi bara.[2] Hapa alipokea jina la Tippu Tip. Kwa mujibu wake mwenyewe, jina hilo lilitokana na mlio wa bunduki yake wa 'tiptip. [3]
